brand eins in April

I arrived home from the airport on Tuesday morning – back from the South Sea. A little more than three weeks abroad caused quite some mail to pile up – and, surprise, surprise, the new “brand eins” was among the letters.
First and foremost, I am disappointed. The cover is coloured in black-red-gold. That is the opposite of my favourite design. Especially after all those beautiful blues of the Pacific Ocean and the many saturated greens around the islands and atolls with their rain forests, I cannot seem to accept it.
In my opinion, subsidies are nonsense, especially if we are talking subsidies to the tune of 163 billion Euros. We simply do not have this kind of money! And, as I see it, the question “How can we subsidize the right things?” simply is one that cannot be reasonably answered.

In the evening, I fight my jetlag by reading in the magazine. And I manage to remain awake, after all…

Indeed, it’s a very exciting brand eins!

Stomach Pace Maker

Back from the South Sea, this is the first morning I again read the “SZ” while enjoying my breakfast at home. Again, I find strange things to read … one article particularly drew my attention:

In Germany, they now implanted the first stomach pace maker.

If I understood correctly, they implanted a 65-gram device that is about as big as a visiting card on the outer stomach wall of a 31-year old lady. The operation lasted a little less than one hour.

Allegedly, the small electronic miracle can control the feeling of hunger and store data about food input and physical exercise. The stomach pace maker, so they say, sends electrical impulses to the stomach, thereby causing a feeling of saturation.

Wow, what wonderful things we now manage to do with IT! Medicine without limits! There is a totally new potential: just imagine the stomach pace maker in combination with an app on the i-phone. Or, when going by car, combined with the on-board system. Or maybe just with the refrigerator …

Or is it all just nonsense?

Does the health insurance pay for this kind of operation? Or will the “pilot customer” get money for agreeing to the experiment? What happens if the device is removed? Or will it remain for your entire life and you just get a replacement at regular intervals.

There are times when I really wonder what kinds of ideas we have put to practice these days. And then I think that, maybe, it would be a good idea to make use of the human inventor spirit for quite a few more important things.

Anyway, I will immediately start putting less food into my body – without using a pace maker!

After only five months, the building shell of Francis’ Don Bosco Shelter can already be seen. Here is his report:
The house will provide room for about fifty children. They will stay between six and twelve months. During this time, the children will be taught the basics of a profession and also get medical care. We will see to it that they can live well and recuperate.

”Bild” in Black

One day after the big elections in Baden-Württemberg und Rhineland- Palatinate. For the first time ever, there will be a Green Prime Minister in Germany. Mind you, this is after 58 years of constant CDU reign. Winfried Kretschmann gave a face to success. So it comes as no surprise that the fact causes disharmony at the “Newspaper of the People” with four letters. It even causes grief. Today, when I first clicked on their internet page, the joyful-sounding title “Greens Radiating!” almost knocked me out.

Great! At least that is what you would have to think. After all, even the “Bildzeitung” should finally have realized that the German South-West has now undergone a political dam bursting. The fact can no longer be soft-talked – as they tried to do in the “zu Guttenberg” case – , because this time the people decided and voted. That must have hit really hard for the self-appointed representatives of “The People’s Vote”, because the people did not decide as “Bild” had expected them to. Consequently, I want to see the representation of the “” internet page as some kind of artistic piece and try to interpret it.
