Deeply Moved

When our forefathers started making their homes – or rather their caves – their castles, it was not possible for them to improve their knowledge and competence in a hurry. Looking back on the last ten thousand years of human development in all due fairness, you notice that “homines sapienses” (incidentally, the meaning of the word is: knowing – so what does that tell you about scientists finding terms to specify something) have hardly changed at all. Fewer teeth due to us eating less raw meat are just about the only change. We are even more or less the same to look at. We are and will remain for a long time the same moving animal that wandered through the forests and steppes. And that is why we are only motivated by things that are deeply moving.

Company Goal: Happiness

You find endless definitions of company goals in the technical literature. Some parameters of success are defined, thousands of descriptions of goals written down. The real goal of every enterprise (and every undertaking) can only be the same as for every individual person: Happiness.

Oh my God! Here comes Willi Streit again with his high-brow, highly charged terms that are hard to define, too. What does he want this time? We all know he likes to be provocative! I am sure there are better things for an enterprise to do than be happy, let alone make others happy!

Company Wellness

Little do you need to feel well, but if you are well, you are the king. The old German folk song might be translated to fit into modern management. We all have known for a long time that employees who feel well work better, make fewer mistakes and are more motivated. Yet when it comes to workplace routine, this company goal is suppressed. It suffers under the restraints caused by fear, worries, frustration and boredom. There are, however, easy methods to make WELL your company psychology.

It’s your choice!

Another election day! There are many people among us who do not enjoy at all that they are permitted to make a decision. If the products in our shops were only labelled, instead of temptingly designed to attract our attention, we would probably starve. Being hesitant, being afraid to make the wrong decision and being afraid to make the right decision are the factors that also prevent enterprises, families and governments from progress.

Many management schools teach sensational bangs, radical cures, drastic behavioural change and rigorous control mechanisms. Is it really the bombshells that bring a company not running smoothly or functioning as it should back on track? In my practice, management training means “low impact”. Small, subtle, almost invisible circumstances have much more impact than the brutal force of an ever-so-.modern doctrine. And what is more: their “soft influence” does not invite resistance.

Last weekend, a friend of mine who has a company of his own in Vienna told me a story that illustrates exactly what I mean. In the storage area of his wholesale house, everything runs smoothly and in harmony during the entire year. Thanks to his natural talent as a leader, this is not the only department of his internationally active company where everything is just fine. However, one week ago, he says, some people in the storage area had an argument and he was called in order to mediate. The cause is irrelevant and was marginal. After he had talked with all the parties concerned, he had literally “poured oil on troubled water”.

What is ESSENTial in Our Lives

What is true for life in general is also true for every enterprise. It can only prosper – and I mean in the long run, over several generations – if it follows the principles of life of the species homo sapiens. These ideas do not just pop up in my brain because of the so-called financial crisis. However, it shifts it a little more to the foreground. Just like in psychology, in business we also seek to lead a fulfilled and happy life by discovering our true nature and following it. Viktor Frankl’s classical work  “…trotzdem JA zum Leben sagen” (Say YES to Life, Regardless) made a lasting impression on me. mehr »

Psychohistory

My colleague Wolfgang Herles delivered a brilliant if critical presentation at the InterFace Forum (IF-Forum). It reminded me of two fields I used to be interested in mehr »

Getting a Kick Out of It

“And all this after I took pains, made an extra effort, and worked to the breaking point!” – this is one of my favourite scenes in “Tadellöser & Wolff” (Walter Kempowski). In her sober Rostock manner, Mother Kempowski expresses her displeasure with the current situation (during World War II and directly after). I usually remember and smile about this sentence (not because I cannot appreciate the hard times the Kempowskis had) whenever I have just finished some hard work or hear others who have. And then they lament or are dissatisfied. In my personal opinion, the major objective of everything we do is something else: plainly and simply to Get a Kick Out of It. mehr »

Communication is Everywhere

We cannot escape. Nobody, never, nowhere. Communication is not just the wonderful link between a sender and a recipient. It is also all the silence, ignoring, body language, confusion going on all around us all the time. And the peak of what you have to accept is: non-communication does not exist. There is no communication-free zone, no area where we can really escape from it. I guess even in the next world (paradise), we will communicate “like the devil”.

PowerPoint Pleasure!

The Council for the Prosecution is always happy if once in a while he does not have to deal with crimes and other offences. And that is exactly how the communication advisor feels about PowerPoint. An excellent idea, namely to upgrade presentation with graphics, has been realized in a criminally unworthy way, and that hurts. However, we get really enthusiastic as soon as a coach manages to take a team with him on a new, creative and successful path.
