Birthday

_mg_3564_torteWe humans invented the irrational habit of counting the number of earth rotations around the sun and considering it an achievement to accumulate a multitude of same in our lives. After each rotation, congratulations are due. That is an irrational birthday habit. After all, there is no real achievement involved in this way of measuring. Someone has accumulated lots of these rotations, so what? All he has to do is wait and refrain from activity – then he will not make any mistakes, either. Why not congratulate people who merit praise, because they have achieved something? Why do we pretend it is an achievement to have witnessed several rotations of the earth around the sun?

With this rational method of counting, a first anniversary is still of special significance. Less than two hundred years ago, someone who lived to see his first birthday was someone who truly deserved congratulations. For half of the population, high infant mortality ended the existence on earth after the first few months. Now we have reason to congratulate the IF blog in two respects: firstly because of its achievements and secondly because it survived its first year.

My heartfelt congratulations on the first anniversary go to the If-blog, the authors I first met and grew fond of at last December’s If-blog party, but, above all, its moderator Roland Dürre. I enjoy being on the team and look forward to further cooperation with all members, as well as criticism and comments by readers. On we go!
