A Night in the Munich Metropolitan Theatre

The day before yesterday, I once again treated myself to a visit to the theatre. This time, it was not in one of the “great” Munich theatre houses. No. I followed Edwin’s recommendation and went to the Metropoltheater.

Although it is called Munich Metropolitan Theatre, the theatre is situated in Freimann. Basically, only railroad people really know Freimann in the north of Munich. Some uppity people consider it a “no-place”. Of course, it has not deserved the title at all, because there are quite a few more nice things in Freimann, apart from this beautiful theatre.

The play was THE BLACK RIDER – and I found it fascinating. A small theatre managed to do something the great, established houses no longer seem capable of (see my article on Ein Mond für die Beladenen in the “Resi”.

They make people laugh and cry with a passionate theatre performance!

Basically, I am surprised. But I really admire the cast of the Metropolitan Theatre!

Seemingly without effort, they steal the minds of people and take them to the magic kingdom of theatre. At the same time, they deeply move the souls of the audience. They are supported and nicely accompanied by the The Devil’s Rubato Band. The scenes are not synthetically underlined. This is Weill/Brecht tradition at its best.

So I had a beautiful night at the theatre. It made me forget the transportation catastrophe on the way in – once again the Munich underground trains were chaotic.

It seems like small theatres with simple means are better capable of moving people than the great ones with their costly and sometimes even unnaturally perfect productions. I wonder if there is a similarity to the general development.

P.S.
Basically, what I should write now is YOU MUST GO AND SEE IT. This would, however, be very cynical towards my readers, because the play is (of course) sold out even into the next year. And that is something I have not seen among the big theatre houses in a long time.

P.S.1
I took the picture from the central media archive Wikimedia Commons. It was taken by Maximilian Dörrbecker (Chumwa).
