“Money, Power, Woman“ or „I Actually Saw It“

The following story happened on one of my early management seminars. I was still rather young and found myself surrounded by impressive company. Next to me, in the seminar room of a hotel near Frankfurt airport, sat quite a few ambitious entrepreneurs, managers and lobbyists. They were all a little older than I and they all wore their business suits.

Initially, we were asked to describe what our expectations of the seminar were. Everybody just said they had come in order to get (even more) successful.

Then the coach asked us what exactly our definition of success was.

One of the participants, he was good-looking, dynamic and apparently quite a success, immediately shot back:

Success – that is money, power and women.

He added that he had no preference as to the sequence.

Well, it’s not what you say, but how you say it. I do not remember how he said it: coquettish, cynically, easy-going, humorously,…? Or maybe he wanted to make a mark?

But in a way, it was a truthful answer, wasn’t it? If you said the desire for power and money (and also for women) is not a strong drive for men, you would be a hypocrite.
