No Bread for the World

When I asked him for a good speaker, one of my friends working at the „Bayerischer Rundfunk“ advised me to consider Herrn Wilfried Bommert of the WDR. After some initial emails to and fro, we had a nice chat on the telephone.

The result is that he will visit us and give a presentation at the IF Forum 2012 on the general idea of
Sustainable Living (and Surviving)”.
His presentation will be titled „Feeding the World“.

In order to learn more about Herrn Bommert, I bought his book “Kein Brot für die Welt” (No Bread For The World). In it, he gives background information on the food crisis.

Incidentally, it is the first ebook I ever bought for the “normal“ price.
Now I read it on my Kindle. It tells you in a very informative and objective way how we humans treat our most important property. I was truly moved by what I read.

The current state of affairs is worse than I would have imagined. And it is hard for me to imagine that any upright person, after having read the book, can still be in favour of, for example, building a third runway for Munich Airport.

I very much recommend for you to read the book:

Wilfried Bommert: “Kein Brot für die Welt – Die Zukunft der Welternährung”, 352 pages on paper, October, 5th, 2009, by  Riemann Verlag (QUERDENKEN).

In the Deutschlandradio, you will find an excellent book review by Susanne Billig.  Here is an excerpt:

In his book “Kein Brot für die Welt” the journalist and agricultural scientist Wilfried Bommert blames the food crisis also  on the disappearance of arable land, the climate change and the decrease of water reserves.

We have not yet decided on the exact day for the presentation by Herrn Bommert at our IF Forum. Herr Bommert will, however, bring his book. And he already told me one thing: since the year 2009, the situation did not improve.

Here is a sideline or two:

I already mentioned films by the Austrian producer Nikiolaus Geyrhalter more than once in the IF blog. On food, I recommend his work Unser täglich Brot. It is meditative, objective, just observing from the sidelines and quite unobtrusive. But you will find all the information in the world in there.

Last not least, I also recommend WE FEED THE WORLD by Erwin Wagenhofer. You can see a lot of it on Youtube, but I would still prefer buying the DVD.

Roland, I don’t understand how the seriousness of the situation can surprise you. See my piece http://if-blog.de/en/cw/wie-wir-unsere-welt-zerstoren/ (even better in English). Perhaps I needed to use more exclamation marks. The attempt to feed the World’s total population may damage the survival chances of the human species even more than airport runways do.

    @Chris:

Also lies erst das Buch.

Today, Monday, comes “The day of the Triffids”, a new film of a book I read in my teens. The book was remarkably prophetic. It showed a horror vision of what could go wrong with “too scientific” agriculture. It also posed the question whether to save lives as far as possible, or to concentrate on saving civilisation, in the case of near extinction of mankind.
Now we know that saving lives would be important to preserve genetic variability. And now genetic engineering is needed to halt mass starvation. Consider developing rice that contains more vitamins and proteins, and that traps 6% instead of 3% of the solar energy. Perhaps the current world population could be nourished sustainably without such techniques. But we people in developed countries will not reduce our “living standard” enough to accomplish this.
