Last Saturday, I went into the big city. It is always a nice experience. Everything was covered by a white blanket of snow. And in front of the civic centre, there was a booth for the carnival prince and princess – the loudspeakers were already turned on for testing.
On the way from Marienplatz to Stachus (Karlsplatz), I passed several fruit and vegetable booths. And what did they offer?
Cherries in January!
To be sure, they looked appetizing, although a little stable (after their long journey). The price was 3.99 Euros for half a kilogram. I found them in huge quantities in every booth I passed – and they were all the same price!
Well, I think there must have been a huge delivery from South Africa to the “Münchner Großmarkthalle”. And the general agreement on how much they should cost, too, works well. Eight Euros for the kilogram is definitely a steep price. I wonder how much of it the producers and the field labourers got? And how many of those cherries will end up in the rubbish because they were not sold?
I did not buy cherries. Personally, I do not think it is “cool” to eat cherries when walking through the snow. No, I think it is a bad habit. In my opinion, it would have been a good thing to see the merchants not doing any business with their cherries!
