RMD – My Travel Journal #20: Riding Through Italy by Bike in Carnival Week

The Way Out

We started on Friday evening – practically directly after work. I had still been in the office at 6.30 p.m. for a final balance discussion and then had gone home. After a small evening meal, we took our bikes and luggage through the steadily falling snow to Ottobrunn Railway station. For the connection to the night train Munich – Rome (CNL 485, departure time 9.07 p.m.), we were going to catch the 8.07 p.m. For a change, the train was on time, so we were almost 30 minutes early for the departure at Munich Central Station on platform 12. Our bikes were deposited in the front of the train, section E, which is reserved for bikes. Then we went back to the double sleeping compartment we had booked. On the opposite side of the platform, we saw a train from Rosenheim arrive. It looked like deepest winter.

The night in the sleeping compartment was as usual: you do not sleep as well as at home, but you are still fairly refreshed by the time you arrive at your destination. Between Munich and Rome, you have about 12 hours for lying in bed.
On Saturday morning at 8 o’clock, the friendly service person is already preparing our breakfast in the empty compartment next to ours: two hard-paper wrappings each filled with a roll, a small portion of cheese spread, a Becel margarine and some nice, warm coffee.
On arrival in Roma Termine railway station at 9.00 a.m., we are greeted by splendid sunshine. Off the train we go with our bikes, loading the luggage onto them, turning on GPS, and then we are under way towards the south.
