Tonight, we start: we board the night train to Rome at 9.03 p.m. at Munich Central Station!
We were going to ride our bikes through Switzerland during the second week of the Pentecost holidays. The low Euro and the bad weather forecast, however, made us modify our plans.
Bella Italia is our new goal. Pasta and truffles.
Getting tickets was not easy at all. If you want to go by bike, you cannot buy it on the internet at www.bahn.de, because there is no online bike reservation. Unfortunately, bike space is now the bottleneck if you want to go by train. And you cannot take a bike on long-distance trains at the new “Bahn AG” without having made a reservation.
What we wanted was the night train to Rome. For Pentecost Sunday, there was no vacancy for two bicycles and a sleeping compartment except for today (Monday, May, 31st) in the night train leaving Munich Central Station for Rome at 9.03 p.m. Incidentally, we were going to start a day or two earlier. But there was no return ticket available for approximately one week after.
So how to get back? There is a daily service from Bolzano to Munich in trains where you can carry bikes. However, you have to change trains several times.
Consequently, we came up with the following plan: we will start in the middle of Italy and ride towards Bolzano. And since the way from Rome to Bolzano might just be a little too long for the relatively little time we have, we bought tickets to Orvieto.
We will start tonight. I look forward to our second bike tour this year. After all, much time has gone by since we went to Corsica by bike during the Easter holidays.
Incidentally, at the time we took the same train to Firenze – and it was just as hard to get tickets.
