Desert Tec #001 – Sahel ‏ساحل

Map_sahelSahel, the green shore of the Sahara, 6,000 kilometres on a vertical line through Africa. Each year, the desert claims another 10 kilometres as it expands southwards.

Thanks to the LandSats and other satellites, our “overview” is quite precise these days. However, thanks to archaeology, we also have an overview with respect to time. It shows that the Sahara bordered the Mediterranean Sea during the ice ages.

Our current insecurity with respect to climate development originates with the decision that we want to practice something like air-pocket engineering. Since we started documenting it in 1850, the ratio of CO2 contained in our air has been continually increasing. Its curve is exponential, paralleling the human growth rate. At the moment, we are approaching the 40 ppm, and we will move beyond that line. In doing so, we will leave the CO2 concentration bandwidth that has been proved to have existed in the atmosphere throughout the last 40 million years.

What electric energy is for the northern civilizations, water is for the Sahel. In the historical moment, there will be negative feedback effects that will cause the continuing retreat of the Sahel savannah and the extension of the Sahara. The troughs will move more and more south, thus minimizing the average rainfall. Desertification will cause occasional catastrophic floods, because the soil can no longer absorb and keep all this water.

Earth, the wonderful one, is a water planet. All you need in order to get one litre of distilled water is 1 litre of salt water and 2300 kJ/kg of energy. Using an ideal typical computation, you need 1 qm of suitable absorbing area and 0,5 h in order to get 1 litre of drinking water from salt water.

DesertTec, which was initiated in order to provide electric energy for the Middle European countries, has a different meaning in the south: Desert Tec, desert technology. For areas south of the Sahara, the raw material for civilization is water. I propose we should not just plan HGÜ cables going north, but also some along the Sahel salt water pipelines from west to east. They should end at local solar farms generating the Sub-Sahara life elixir with the help of the son.
