    In one job, the successful local chief used to give a talk for his few hundred workers once per year. He used to give his opinion that we were lazy and lacking in initiative. If we did not improve, he would stop rescuing the situation, and go and find another job. This used to depress me to the extent that I could not work properly for the next day or two. The rest of the year, everything ran well. My immediate boss told me never to talk to the chief, because he would misunderstand and go and make a mess of something.
