April, 4th – our third day on the bikes – also gave us quite a few challenges.
We started early – and consequently made good progress quickly. During the first few kilometres, the way was permanently up and down. At noon, we had managed far more than 500 metres of altitude.
But there was little traffic and after every incline, there was a nice decline.
Then traffic increased. So we tried to take small roads – which, unfortunately, was not always a success.
And again, there was much to see.
A number of small rivers emptied themselves into the ocean. They were filled with water flowing quite fast. In summer, you can probably see nothing but the empty gravel bedding.
There were some fire-fighting planes, probably flying their first action of the year. They went down to the ocean in order to re-load with water and then take their cargo into the mountains for deployment.
Eventually, we ended up in the Hotel Zelima at the end of the small village Acquappesa.
To be sure, there were several other hotels in the village – but they were all (still) closed. Perhaps this is just too early in the season? Shortly before the hotel, we also suffered the first flat tyre on Sophie’s bike. But it was no problem to repair in the evening – it was a rather treacherous small glass splinter on the front tyre cloak.
On the whole, however, we can clearly feel that we are going south. Tomorrow, we will have to be extra careful. It seems that hotels already open for the season are getting fewer and fewer. And it seems that our intended route is exclusively along big, hideous streets.
But I am sure we will find something. And then we plan to spend the following night in one of the bigger towns.
