UTB #7 From Pizzo to Nicotera (65 km)

On Good Friday, we see the last of beautiful Pizzo. Then we continue on our way …

It is rather late this morning. Due to the festivities held on Maundy Thursday, we ordered breakfast for 9 a.m. The croissants have been made by the bakery right next door.

It is after 10 o’clock when we finally take our leave from the nice landlord and his bar. Pizo is a truly beautiful place with wonderful views and scenery.

All we know is the direction we are heading in: we want to go south. There are several routes we can take. We are not sure which way to choose. Well, this is how it feels to be spoilt for choice.

It is not like we want to go real far today. Perhaps as far as Nicotera? That would mean we can transfer to Sicily on Saturday.

We decide to ride down to the ocean. Then away from the ocean to Ricadi and down again. This is the longest of all possible routes. But to make up for it, it looks like considerably less metres of altitude than any of the other routes.

One of the stations on our way would be Tropea. Allegedly, it is also one of those beautiful towns with a steep bank right in the middle of the rocks.

We arrive there around 1 p.m. It is even better than we expected. You always get a view onto the ocean, the beach and the distance from high above. It is like a dream. Lunch takes us quite long. And all of a sudden it is after three o’clock and we have only covered 30 kilometres today.

So we continue towards Nicotera. It almost turns out to be a strain. The way is zigzag, we eat up kilometres, but still we hardly seem to get closer.

Shortly before 7 p.m., we arrive high up in Nicotera. Looking for a hotel, we ride through the narrow lanes of the old city. Again, there is a wonderful view opening far out. Very beautiful.

Friendly inhabitants tell us that there is no hotel up here. But at Nicotera Marina, we might find some. It is another 5 kilometres.

So here we go on a last decline – almost 300 metres of altitude down. It is already a little cold. Finally, we arrive and find the Hotel Antica Marina. And we are immediately fascinated.

They have everything you need after well over 1,000 metres of altitude. Soft beds, a luxurious shower, great food and excellent wine. As in all the hotels of our trip, the rooms are great. They are huge and spacey with wonderful stone floors – and a (working) WLAN is also included in today’s price.

So what else could you wish for? Even the weather forecast for Holy Saturday (rain for the region) cannot dampen our enthusiasm.

P.S.
The pictures are just what I took on our way. Currently, I simply have no access to the best pictures. When I finish my travel Palermo journal, I will include them all.
