From the empirical number mysticism to the world economic crisis!
Our brain capacity when it comes to numbers is immense. The fact that we can count and compute is just a by-product of this capacity. What is more important is the precision of a non-conscious process, where we notice what happens in the world based on an inert numerical understanding. It is remarkable that all cultures and languages have a numerical system in which we humans imitate what we perceived to happen in the world, at least with respect to the first three numbers. Each line of the roman symbol “III” represents an event. If we hear a church bell ring, we mark each strike with a line. We also mark a piece of wood with these lines, provided we carry one. That is why there is a reflection of the world as we perceive it in every number we write down. Even animals are capable of this distinction and storage of numbers. They often distinguish quite well whether a lever in their cage has to be touched twice or thrice for the food to appear.
The French mathematician and neurologist Stanislas Dehaene found out that this human precision when it comes to identifying the world’s events reaches a lot further than has been assumed in the past. He looked into world-wide human anxiety that warns us of the threats of the year 2009. Starting with the relation of numbers hidden in the digits of this year’s representation, susceptible people can read relations according to mechanisms they themselves are not aware of. According to them, the year 2009 will be particularly dramatic. What matters is the sum of digits of the number: 11. It is a dangerous prime number, because it is separated from the next primary number by the holy number 12. The numbers 11 and 13 constitute a pair of prime number twins, because – as only seldom happens – both consecutive uneven numbers are primary numbers.
Instances of a connection with prime number twin pairs in European history can, for instance, be found in the catastrophic developments at Paris University in the years 1277 and 1279, which are both also prime numbers. That was the first time a bishop by decree prohibited the teaching of a certain theory which in retrospect has been proven to be wrong and fatal, namely Aristotelian physics.
The holiness of the number 12 is not only caused by the 12 apostles, but also by the 12 months of each year, the 12 signs of the zodiac and the 12 hours on a watch which divide every day into twice 12 hours. Apparently, our brain cells store the reception of happiness in this world in connection with the number 12. The number 12 defends the number 6. Twice 6 is 12. Inherent in this is the solution of the negative by itself as we practice it daily when we multiply two negative numbers with each other and the result is a positive number. Therefore, the art of thinking positive is the art of solving the negative into the positive.
If we multiply the number 12 by three, we get 36, which is the key for the apocalyptic number 666. Incidentally, if we add up all numbers from 1 to 36, the result will be 666 (the sum of all numbers from 1 to 11 is 66, that is 11 times 6!). In the biblical revelations 13.18 by John, this number is mentioned. Small wonder that the 11th of September 2001 (sum of digits: 3!) portended the end of western capitalism. The year 2009 is the result if you multiply the two prime numbers 7 (twice) and 41. Magicians believed that any magic formula had to be intoned seven times. However, the connection between their belief and the mental categories that thus represent the perception from cosmic observations did not strike them. Today, we can empirically prove that our perception for numerical relations is immensely precise, thus first making it possible for us to find our way in this world.
Close your eyes and then let someone clap their hands on your right and left sides. Without seeing it or having prior knowledge of the source, your brains will tell you on which side someone clapped their hands. From the minimum in difference between the time the sound reached one ear and the other, your brain determined the exact position of the noise. In this experiment, the speed is a relevant factor. If you had been reduced to relying on your cortex for finding out according to which formula and with what trigonometric functions to compute the position of the noise, you would not only have failed due to your slowness and forgetfulness, but also because of all the computing errors you would have fallen victim to. Because non-conscious brainwork on numbers is unbelievably fast, precise and reliable.
We are well advised to take the non-conscious perceptions seriously. Among those are the relations between numbers on which qualified evaluations of the world’s findings can be based. Of the 75 people asked by Stanislas Dehaene, 69 (!) said that the apocalyptic events of 2009 do not stem from the world-wide economical crisis, but from the sun. Well, enjoy the heat!
