Dear Friends,
in the last week, I spent more time weeping than laughing. My life here changed me in more respects than I would have expected. Today, this country is as full of misery as it was during the war, even though the war ended more than 30 years ago. Speaking for the handicapped people, I thank you for your help. May God grant you peace and health.
The children really have had poor luck since they were born. In a country as economically weak as Vietnam, their misery is even greater – which means that they need your help even more.
Most of them have been born into very poor families. There is a shortage of everything. Your help will support them and make them stronger, so they can learn to accept their destiny as handicapped persons. It might make them feel that even though they are handicapped, still they are not considered the waste of society.
They were born in misery. Nobody wants them: neither their parents nor their fellow human beings. It is a harsh destiny before God. Perhaps their lives are also a payment for our good destinies to some extent. Perhaps our lives are easier because of it. Are they, perhaps, also a sacrifice to God? Who knows the answers? No matter what – do we really have the right to continue living as unmoved as we did? Dear God, show me the right way to help the most miserable of your children. Did these children ever berate God for sending them into the world with their handicaps? No. On the contrary. They pray every day: “Dear Creator, help me”, even though most of them have no religion.
Together with 400 students and Bishop Peter, I spent the time between December, 20th and December 21st to organize the Christmas party for the children. 750 handicapped people attended, which means that 240 of them came without invitation. From the outset, I had been worried about how to provide for them all. Luckily, someone had donated an ox, so the food was enough for all of them. We had good food, music, social contacts, gifts and laughter.
Unfortunately, one child was left back after the party. The child is an orphan, has been living with relatives up to now and is a hundred per cent dependent on outside help. I brought it to the St. Paul sisters.
Today is the 26th of December. I am taking a break and writing you this letter to thank you and ask to further support my work. The money will be directly forwarded to the children, without detours or complex administration.
