Anxiety II – Filthy Lucre.

There is no reason why you should be scared because of the world economic crisis and its consequences. After having written an article about this, I received quite a few critical comments. Because, so I was told, the world financial and world economical crises are really terrible danger scenarios and must by all means be taken seriously.

Now the world economic crisis is (allegedly) over. Nevertheless, it seems to me that many people tend to be more afraid than before.

Why would that be so? Haven’t we provided well for our future?

Many people, especially in my age group, are quite prosperous. They live debt-free in their own house or flat. More often than not, they own a little-used but still impressive additional holiday home. The remaining property is well-invested and multiplies by itself through rent, exchange profit or interest. And once in a while there is the occasional inheritance.

But – all is not really well:

The holiday home is more of a burden than a delight. And mostly it is situated so far from home that you can only reach it by plane. And maybe it is in a country threatened by climate changes or political instability. Matters can change in no time.

The remaining money is mostly invested virtually: on the fixed deposit account, in shares, government bonds, certificates of indebtedness or in a fund. Will this money ever return? What if there is a crash?

And how long will we continue to find people who want to rent the not quite so excellent flat in the not quite so excellent environment? After all, the number of people living in Germany dwindles?

What will the small retirement money or the bigger pension be worth after inflation and/or state bankruptcy? How long will the company pension and other old-age provisions actually last? And how much worth will the life insurance be in the end? Even the ounces of gold cannot serve as nourishment, can they?

There was never an absolute certainty. Now even the uncertainties grow!

Basically, there is only one thing we can do:

Be happy with less prosperity.

But I guess less makes us happier than more, anyway. It is a macabre paradox. We run after what makes us unhappy. Property is a burden.

No, fear is something you must not allow to even enter. And the only way to achieve this is to have a task that gives your life meaning.
