Climbing Up

This morning, I read an article in the local news sector of the “Süddeutsche” about a controversial program initiated by the State Capital City titled: “Climbing Up”. The Capital City wants to motivate more of its citizens to substitute their cars with their bikes and thought of a program that is only partly inventive.

It costs money, is a little artificial and is greatly criticized in public. And those who oppose it take advantage of the opportunity and again complain massively about the cyclists. There are too many of those rowdies already in Munich.

I find the intension of the program quite fine. However, it is put into practice rather poorly.

So here I am, for a change giving advice to the Capital City:

Dear Fathers of the Capital City,

Why don’t you just come up with a toll for vehicles with combustible motors in your sphere of responsibility?

To be sure, it would again cause much of an outcry and apocalyptic prophesies from lobbyists and interest groups. But after it all will have been put into practice, your goals concerning traffic policy will be achieved! And Munich will be even more charming that it already is.

And if cities like Singapore can do it, you can do it! Ten years from now, all metropolitan cities of this world will have this kind of poll. Why don’t you go ahead and play the model role for the future?
