Sustainability is not only trendy. More and more people want to develop their lives and the issues they are responsible for “sustainably”. I witness the same tendencies among very “simple” people as among top managers. For instance, the honorary sports club president is the same as the department manager of a DAX company. There is a huge majority among the people in favour of sustainability.
Modesty and frugality, too, are re-discovered both among the general population and in enterprises. “Ancient issues” such as Kaizen and “lean management” in its positive sense celebrate their comeback. Please note that “lean management” must not be confused with “free of leadership”.
Times have changed.
During the industrial revolution, nobody thought twice about the environment falling victim to progress. To be sure, there were some artists and freethinkers who, even then, warned against destruction caused by progress. But the progress and the belief in the new age of technology were just too big. Thus, nature was plundered in a way the majority of people would consider criminal today.
And the motto “prosperity at all costs” is “out”.
It is therefore a necessary requirement for an ethical enterprise to do more than just minimize the destruction of environment, even if this costs considerable extra money and competition disadvantages.
During all processes, we should keep in mind that we must preserve our beautiful “blue planet”. Thus, for an “ethical enterprise”, the motto should always be sustainability on all levels.
The threshold of location and time must be minimized in the production processes. Both supply and production must be decentralized. Sustainability has to win over the cost pressure.
When using sources, we must remember that our earth is finite. Animals and food, in particular, should not be considered “normal” sources.

Or course, all those pictures of flowers were also taken during one of my bike rides in Mani!
