On my way to work, especially in autumn, I like using the “sheep road”. The road got its name from my small daughter.
You often see sheep on this road, and when we were riding our bikes, she was very impressed by this. So she named it sheep road.
It is probably the nicest way from Ottobrunn to Unterhaching, even if it is a little longer than the other routes.
On the picture below, you can see a herd of sheep on the right side of the camper. Still further to the right, you find the industrial region of north-west Ottobrunn.
The “sheep’s road” crosses the area of the former military airport Neubiberg in a zigzag line south of the former tarmac. The one-time military ground is now a beautiful area of retreat for humans and animals between the townships of Neubiberg, Ottobrunn and Unterhaching.
The tarmac is a broad band of concrete that stretches for several kilometres. You can also use it for cycling from Ottobrunn to Unterhaching. Weather permitting, you find cyclists, skaters and pedestrians enjoying themselves.
It is often the chosen location for parties, and if there is a strong wind, you can see plenty of paragliders and kites in the air.
As they cruise on the great concrete areas driven by wind energy, I find the three-tyre vehicles with sails especially amusing. There used to be many model toy airplanes, which was quite exciting.
For environmental reasons, flying model toy airplanes have now been forbidden. Consequently, now the hobby model flyers are back to going to Unterschleißheim by car in order to enjoy themselves. That is environmental protection for you.
Living in a densely populated area, I am always delighted to see these huge masses of open land in front of me. You can see untouched nature all around you.
To the south, the Alpes build a massive silhouette, which is clearly visible if the wind is blowing from the south. To the east, you can figure that the Unterhaching skyscrapers must be looming, and to the north, there is the University of the armed forces. And beyond: our state capitol.
What sometimes makes me ponderous is the multitude of bunkers. Some of them have already been filled up. All you see is dams or knolls overgrown with bushes or trees.
I often ask myself why the bunkers have been filled in. You can still see some of them. On the one hand, they look like memorials; on the other hand, they are often decorated with colourful “graffiti”.
And whenever I ride to work on the “sheep’s road” through nature and quietness, I wonder what it looked like during the war. What an absurd amount of passion was wasted on all the work and fighting going on around this place? How many (useless) sacrifices were made around here? And it gives me pause to imagine all the destinies that must have been decided here.
I am glad that everything is so peaceful today. And, grateful for an entire life in peace, I ride on to work, feeling content.
