Now the German female soccer team dropped out. Nobody says
„Finishing third is for the men, winning the championship is for the ladies!”
any more.
Now you can buy tickets for the final game quite cheaply at ebay. The “Midsummernight’s Dream” is over!
And the Olympic Games of 2018 will not be held in Germany, either. No Winter Tale in Germany. Instead, they will be held in South Korea. Although we all believed ourselves to be ever so superiour, our application team lost by a mile. If you are into management, you will call this “lack of realistic self-estimation” or “perception disorder”.
In Korea, both the people and the powerful business concerns wanted to have the Olympic Games. The situation was different in Germany. Most of the people could not have cared less, quite a few were openly opposed to the idea. Neither was the industry particularly enthusiastic about the Olympic Games in Germany. You can make better use of the money. And you no longer sell a SUV in China just because the Olympic Games take place in Germany.
Mind you, this is not a criticism. On the contrary: I am quite glad that neither managers nor the people in Germany very much felt like hosting the Olympic Games. The ancient concept of uniting peoples no longer plays a role, anyway. These days, the Olympics are nothing but another media-intensive festival, as I see it even just one of a minor category. And we certainly already have enough of those. Just think of the inflationary Formel-1 events or all the numerous championships in all kinds of diciplines, both continental and world-wide.
Thus, the lack of interest in the Olympic Games in Germany seems like a social advance to me. Many people in Germany discovered that there are more imporant things in life than Olympic Games. The challenges we have to face have a totally different dimension. And if you want to save a sinking ship, partying on deck will be more of a hindrance than a help. The Koreans will find out, too.
