Time goes by faster and faster. Yet we do not know in which time we live. As we all know, the Middle Ages have been left behind a few centuries ago. Was that an eternity, or was it just a moment?
The “industrial revolution” changed the world. World Wars, also between ideologies, have reached new dimensions.
Many things rushed by. We had modernism and post modernism, new age and the end of new age. The information society caused total confusion.
And still, we are looking for freedom and humanity, social progress.
How will they call the times we are now living in – times during which ownership is so very important for us all – fifty years from now?
A short time ago, a friend of mine suggested that we just left the age of “acceleration” behind us and are now entering the age of “post-acceleration”. For me, “post” is a prefix to avoid. Consequently, I would rather call it the age of “de-celeration”.
But it really makes no huge difference. Perhaps all will turn out totally different? Once in a while, I have a dream. It is not a nice dream, neither is it utopian. It is more like a nightmare.
I sometimes dream that we have reached the “end age”. I do not mean the end of the world like the Maya. Instead, I dream that the climate experts were wrong, Their predictions on the global warming have been verified. Everything will be different from how we had assumed.
Because, due to our life-style, the parameters of the planet changed in such a way that the consequences are not just a slow increase of temperature. Instead, our “way of life” caused some rather abrupt changes. Changes which actually are a threat to our “life”. And I am talking changes that only very few persons in very special situations and circumstances will survive.
But be not afraid, it is only a dream? Yes. However, if I take a close look at the facts and – thinking cybernetically, in terms of a layman – I think an abrupt collapse of our planetary cosmos is more likely than the slow variant of destruction.
But so what? After all, we live in the age of “now” and “endless fun” – so why worry about tomorrow? So here is the motto: continue as before and welcome to the END AGE!
