Sitting It Out and Suspension

Now the general conscription is suspended. After they have been sitting on the issue (like on so many others, such as speed limit, street tolls, taxation of business cars, final storage of nuclear waste,…) for years.

A short time ago, our Federal Minister of Defense was asked why there is only a suspension, rather than a total abolition?
He answered that, after all, you cannot know now if, maybe, we will need it again twenty years from now.

Well, here is what I think:

If you abolish the conscription – and if we needed it again in 20 years – then we could re-institute it, couldn’t we?

Do I detect a strange reasoning?

I would have preferred if it had been totally abolished, simply because I hope that we will never need it again. In my personal opinion. we never really needed it.

In any case, I am glad that this issue – which has been pending far too long – is now being tackled.
